The DC Studios logo is seen in a rainy Gotham alley
Narrative
Following the events of The Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin, attempts to seize the reins of Gotham’s underworld. From melting makeup to filming in freezing temperatures, Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti share how they got into their roles during the production of The Penguin. Colin Farrell fought hard to get his version of the Penguin to smoke tobacco in The Batman (2022), but he didn’t succeed. In his own series, however, the character is portrayed as an occasional tobacco user with a penchant for cigars.
Tone and atmosphere absolutely nailed
An umbrella falls down and the logo changes to the Warner Bros. logo. Seen in Graham Norton i gosti: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024). Rough, dirty and gritty but Farrell manages to capture that air of charm that brought Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano.
Where to start with Farrell?
There are similarities to The Sopranos, especially in tone. There’s a lot of grim stuff happening in that opening episode but there are still comedic moments that fit the tone and don’t undermine it. Amazing is the right word. I love seeing talented star actors fully commit to roles like this and the makeup/CGI or whatever they did to physically transform him into the Penguin not only passes the eye test, it looks incredibly realistic.
And Farrell completely immerses himself in the role as an actor
There’s always the risk that if the makeup isn’t good enough or just a little bit off it can be completely distracting. With The Penguin it adds to his performance and the overall quality of the show because it’s so damn well done. I may be a little biased because he was one of my favorite actors before this show, but I think he gets some well-deserved recognition. I never tune into new shows right away because I prefer to watch all the episodes in one go, but I wanted to see how this one really turned out.
It didn’t disappoint; it blew me away
